Cheryl and JaVonne: Browse Music

I started writing this song after falling in love with Cheryl in 2004. The original song only had my part and the hook, which was a little different than it is now. It took me another 4 years to write Cheryl's response, because I couldn't imagine what she would say if I actually proposed! Well, she told me she loved me but wouldn't marry me until the laws changed in NJ (our home state). Then I was able to write her verse. Hmmm...funny how that happened :-)
The initial hook was written as "...I don't care about the law, cause it's you baby, you woman that I adore." We performed this song at a few functions and received a really positive audience response. I became more interested in the fight for marriage equality after the Proposition 8 fiasco in California. There wasn't much public outcry from the LGBTQ people of color community that I could see and I found this disturbing because this is our fight also. So, I became involved and have been trying to learn more as I go. What I also decided was that this song could possibly add a little R&B flavor to this important movement and help further consciousness and increase awareness around the cause. During a telephone fund raiser supporting Marriage Equality, a wonderful woman took notice of the song and suggested that some of the lyrics did not quite send the intended message, and so I changed them to better meet the needs of the cause. Hence, the song is finally completed and we put it in your hands! Let's send a clear message that this cause is important to all of us! Help us get this song heard across the country and let's convince our law makers that it's time for a real change!
